Position Overview

The Publications Designer, under the supervision of the Lead Marketing Coordinator and the guidance of the Student Leadership and Recruitment Coordinator of Student Affairs - Information Technologies (SAIT), is responsible for design and production of all printed materials to advertise Residential Computing services and programs in the residence halls. The Publications Designer develops images for use on ResComp's public website and assists with trademark creation and designing other publicity products such as t-shirts, posters, flyers, etc. The Publications Designer is a member of the Marketing team and a collaborator on all public-facing Residential Computing campaigns, including student recruitment, workshops, and Fall opening programs.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong graphic design and page layout skills.
  • Extensive experience with publishing/imaging application in each of the following categories:
    • Photo editing and image creation (Adobe Photoshop)
    • Drawing (Adobe Illustrator)
    • Page layout (Adobe InDesign, Adobe Acrobat)
  • Strong background with one of the following operating systems and familiarity with the others: Windows (XP/Vista/7), Mac, UNIX (Linux).
  • Ability to clearly document all projects and to manage requests from Residential Computing staff efficiently.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of users and technology support staff.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • GPA of 2.0.

Preferred:

  • Strong interest and background in art and/or design
  • Experience in marketing and outreach
  • Experience teaching or training others
  • Experience coordinating with printing companies for production of printed materials

Terms of Employment

  1. The period of employment for this position commences upon hire and continues through the end of the 2012-2013 academic year.
  2. The Publications Designer is paid a wage of $16.00 per hour. The position's classification title is Assistant III. The Publications Designer must be a currently enrolled university student with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (2.3 or higher preferred). Students with less than a 2.3 may be asked to limit their work hours.
  3. The Publications Designer will participate in a mandatory training program of approximately 2-5 hours per week during the Spring semester, including orientation on Friday, April 6th, 2012.
  4. The Publications Designer is required to work 10-15 hours per week during the academic semester. A work schedule will be determined in consultation with the Lead Marketing Coordinator and the Student Leadership & Recruitment Coordinator.
  5. The Publications Designer must be available to work up to 40 hours per week during the Summer of 2012. A minimum of 20 hours a week must be worked during regular business hours on at least 3 business days per week.
  6. Active participation in Senior Staff Training (the week of August 6th, 2012) and Residential Computing Consultant (RCC) training (the week starting August 13th, 2012) is required. The Publications Designer must be available for all day training on Friday, August 17th, 2012. The only exception will be for students actually taking a final exam.
  7. The Publications Designer is required to work 20-30 hours per week from January 2-January 9, 2013.
  8. A valid driver's license and a driving record check is required for all Residential Computing employees who drive the departmental vehicle in the course of their work.
  9. It is a requirement that anyone in this position work in a safe and responsible manner while not putting him/herself or others at risk. This includes complying with applicable policies and regulations; using personal safety gear; observing warning signs; learning about potential hazards; and reporting unsafe conditions.
  10. Employment with the Information Technologies unit is subject to the applicant's ability to provide appropriate documentation and sign necessary papers for employment in conformance with state laws and University regulations.
  11. Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance evaluation by the Lead Marketing Coordinator and the Student Leadership and Recruitment Coordinator.

Job Duties

(50%) Graphic Design and Publications Production

  • Create promotional material including, but not limited to, flyers, signs, posters, and t-shirts. (*)
  • Coordinate production and distribution of printed materials. (*)
  • Oversee the ResComp Bulletin program in the residence halls, including ongoing posting audits. (*)
  • Design layouts for informational materials and contribute articles if necessary. (*)

(25%) Marketing

  • Collaborate with the Residential and Student Service Programs Marketing department to produce publish the "Getting Connected" brochure, an introductory publication mailed to all incoming residential students.
  • Collaborate with other departmental staff to promote various Residential Computing programs such as the In-Room Connection program, the Helpdesk system, instructional workshops, Cal Connect workshops, and Knowledge Base Articles.
  • Work with Residential Computing staff to develop and market the Residential Computing brand.
  • Edit and create promotional materials for large Residential Computing events including Internet registration, hiring cycles, and educational campaigns. (*)

(15%) Administrative Duties

  • Maintain marketing materials archive. (*)
  • Communicate regularly with the Unit Supervisor team, via email and weekly meetings, to coordinate distribution of materials. (*)
  • Follow through with marketing requests made via an online request tracking system and update status of requests in a timely manner.
  • Update online calendar regularly (*)
  • Add all Marketing projects to the Residential Computing Wiki and keep the status updated. (*)

(10%) Technical Advising

  • Assist with the training and development of Resident Computer Consultants.
  • Act as a technical resource for Residential Computing staff in the area of marketing and publication design.
  • Develop and distribute information sheets and other educational resources.(*)

(5%) Staff Development

  • Assist with the training and development of Residential Computing Consultants.
  • Give workshops in various Marketing-related subjects.
  • Maintain extensive documentation for all projects and participate in internal documentation format. (*)
  • Help cultivate an inclusive workplace culture among IT student staff.
  • Maintain online Marketing manual. (*)
