Senior Network Engineering Assistant

Position Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Network and System Engineering Supervisor and the Lead Network Engineering Assistant in Infrastructure Services (IS), in collaboration with other technical teams of student and full-time staff of Student Affairs - Information Technologies (SAIT), the Senior Network Engineering Assistant works with the team that is responsible for overseeing the administrative helpdesk and residential helpdesk tags and projects to manage the installation, setup, and support of over 8,000 network/cable TV connections, with approximately 400 network devices in 300+ wiring closets to provide network and cable TV to all residence halls and RSSP administrative offices, as well as direct customer service to residents and administrative staff. The Network Engineering Assistants also support over 300 Cal1Card peripheral devices.

Qualifications

Required: Effective communication and organizational skills; ability to manage and supervise team and projects; ability to prioritize tasks and delegate responsibilities; experience in teaching or training others; excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative; must be able to quickly learn and apply information on technologies; extensive knowledge of network/cable TV infrastructure; strong working knowledge of different types of Ethernet termination and layer two switch patching; experience troubleshooting cable TV RF signals, Cat5e, serial standard, computer application/network problems; ability to lift computer equipment (50-100 lbs); minimum GPA of 2.0.

Preferred: Previous leadership experience; self-motivated; experience in cable TV troubleshooting signals from the satellite head ends all the way to the TV connections; experience with installations/repairs of the network infrastructure from the data closet to the residential room/office/wireless/devices connections; basic knowledge of TCP/IP to serial and experience in Cal1Card peripherals troubleshooting, including but not limited to: Point-Of-Sale systems, meal readers, laundry controllers, vending machine debit card readers, payroll time clocks, building security monitors, building door access proximity card readers and the terminal servers for all peripheral communications throughout the campus and the immediate surrounding community of off-campus vendors.

Terms of Employment

  1. The period of employment for this position commences upon hire and continues through the end of the 2012-2013 academic year.
  2. The Senior Network Engineering Assistant is paid a wage of $16.00 per hour. The Senior Network Engineering Assistant must be a currently enrolled UC Berkeley student with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  3. The Senior Network Engineering Assistant is required to work 10-19 hours per week during the academic year, including a minimum of 3 hours shift between 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday, some after hours meeting time, and occasional after hours/weekend duties for emergency tasks. A work schedule will be determined in consultation with the Network and System Engineer Supervisor/Lead Network Engineering Assistant.
  4. Summer availability is required.
  5. The Senior position is required to participate in the Senior staff orientation on April 6th, 2012, and training session the week of August 13th, 2012.
  6. Employment with the Information Technologies unit is subject to the applicant's ability to provide appropriate documentation and sign necessary papers for employment in conformance with state laws and University regulations.
  7. This position is subject to a criminal background check. Regular operation of UC vehicles as part of assigned job duties is required. A DMV check for a valid driver's license and driving record screening is required. Position meets the following criteria:
    • Possession of key or card access to computer storage areas.
    • Operation of University vehicles as part of assigned job duties.
    • Specific job duties: Requires access to both on and off site computer equipment storage. Driving is preferred to get to various units and locations.

Job Duties

(30%) Senior Responsibilities

  • The Senior Network Engineering Assistant helps with selection and training of 4-5 Network Engineering Assistants.
  • Serve as lead for projects, oversee support of helpdesk tags and bugs.
  • Act on behalf of the Network and Systems Engineer Supervisor/Lead Network Engineering Assistant in his/her absence to oversee daily operations, staff coverage and ongoing projects.
  • Foster collaboration among the team and with other teams.
  • Ensure problems are properly escalated when necessary.
  • Assist in preparing agendas and conducting regularly scheduled team staff meetings.
  • Assist with evaluating Network Engineering Assistants by providing feedback to supervisor.
  • Participate in cross-functional team meetings.

(45%) Infrastructure Support

  • Proactively lead the Network Engineering team in installation, setup, and support of network infrastructure for all the residence halls and administrative offices, including installing and terminating cables; troubleshooting and repair of damaged connections; configuration and installation or troubleshooting/replacement of dysfunctional network switches and any other related devices; if needed, some degree of desktop troubleshooting to get the users back on-line. Conduct wireless analysis, install/maintain wireless access points.
  • Lead projects for the team in support of all cable TV infrastructures, install and terminate cables, taps, splitters, amplifiers, and line extenders; troubleshoot and repair damaged connections/devices; maintain satellite head end equipment; conduct infrastructure analysis and diagnosis, including but not limited to testing radio frequency, audio, noise level and the balance of signals for all the channels at different levels.
  • Demonstrate good customer service by overseeing projects, help desk tags, and bugs.
  • Delegate and follow up with Network Engineering staff in completing specific tasks.
  • Serve as a technical resource for troubleshooting.

(15%) Business Peripheral Support

  • Assist in overseeing routine maintenance of business system peripheral devices for both hardware and software: install, configure, maintain, and routinely do preventive maintenance. Peripheral devices include: meal access readers, Micros cash registers, laundry controller units, security monitor readers, time clocks, vending machine readers, DSP door access readers, off-campus vendor readers, and terminal servers.
  • Promptly follow through on assigned tasks.

(10%) Documentation

  • Oversee maintaining, documenting, and labeling network devices/equipment and all network drops.
  • Maintain equipment database inventory for tracking purposes.
  • Document problems and solutions on shared documentation tool.
  • Assist in developing educational resources, such as information sheets and network troubleshooting resources.
  • Recommend modifications to policies and procedures as needed.
