What does Be Secure do?

Be Secure contains a collection of free software and configurations specially prepared by the Network Security team at Residential Computing for use by students living in the residence halls. A few minutes now can save hours of frustration and data loss later on.

Be Secure is the easiest and fastest way for you to compute safely on the residence hall network and to meet campus minimum security standards.

Windows Software

Symantec Client Security for Windows XP
Symantec Client Security is a top-of-the-line firewall and antivirus software application. UC Berkeley provides a student license for unlimited virus definition updates, so your computer stays up-to-date.

Symantec Antivirus for Windows Vista
For Windows Vista computers, the Be Secure software download will install Symantec Antivirus. Note that to meet minimum security standards, you will need to either enable the built-in Windows firewall, or install another.

Automatic Updates, XP Service Pack 3, and More
Be Secure also includes the latest updates and service packs for Windows. These ensure that your operating system is free of security vulnerabilities.

Macintosh Software

The full Be Secure software package is intended for computers running Windows XP or Vista. If you have a Macintosh computer, Be Secure provides only the Norton Anti-Virus program. This program is also available for download at http://software-central.berkeley.edu/. Remember that you will still need to meet campus minimum security requirements.
