Technical Details and FAQWhat if Be Secure won't install on my computer? While ResComp has done extensive testing to ensure that the Be Secure software is as compatible as possible with as many configurations as possible, we cannot test for everything. Particularly for non-English language computers, Be Secure software may not install properly because Symantec Corporation does not officially support non-English Windows systems. Alternatively, extremely low-end computers that do not meet the recommended computer specifications may find that Symantec Client Security runs too slowly to be useful. While we definitely recommend that residents take all necessary steps to install Be Secure, we recognize that this may not always be possible. Please note: Even if you do not install the Be Secure software, you must meet the campus minimum security standards. This guide is designed to assist you in finding alternative software to ensure the security of your computer. Furthermore, if you are having problems installing, you can always contact a friendly RCC to help you install Be Secure or troubleshoot your problems. Why do I have to uninstall my current security software?Installing two different types of security software on the same machine will cause software conflicts. The campus license for Symantec Client Security comes with free, unlimited virus definition updates. Most software bundled with a new computer only provides updates for a short period of time. How can I make my computer comply with the minimum security standards without installing Be Secure? There are several steps you must follow to secure your computer if you do not wish to install Be Secure. First, you must install an approved host-based firewall and an approved anti-virus program. A list of approved software is available at http://security.berkeley.edu/approved.software.html. You must also configure your firewall to allow scans from Berkeley network security scanners. This is to ensure your security and to protect the integrity of the Berkeley network. The following IP addresses must be added to the trusted list:
If you need help configuring your firewall to add these IP addresses, please contact an RCC. Failure to add theses addresses may result in your In-Room Connection being disabled. Remember that if you do not install the Be Secure software, you are also responsible for complying with the other Minimum Security Standards — such as installing up-to-date operating system patches and setting strong administrator passwords. If you do not comply with any one of these standards, your In-Room Connection may be automatically disabled. The quickest and easiest way to make sure you are in compliance is to install the Be Secure software. What if I own an Intel-core Macintosh?Mac OS X comes pre-packaged with a software firewall that meets the minimum security standards. Please make sure this firewall is activated by following these steps:
Please also make sure that your system has an administrator password properly set. This is also a part of the minimum security standards. To set your administrator password, follow these steps:
