Data flows quickly and smoothly when the amount of traffic traveling in the pipe is small relative to the size of the pipe. When the amount of traffic exceeds the capacity of the pipe, the speed at which data travels begins to drop. Imagine the network wires as pipes - the larger the pipes, the more data can pass through.
While using the Internet, you are using bandwidth to transfer data. Bandwidth is counted for both uploads and downloads. Abusing bandwidth refers to an individual taking up a larger share of the pipe than they should. When students on the residence hall network are sharing lots of music and movie files, the speed of the network decreases for everyone. When bandwidth use rises, so do bandwidth costs. Increasing costs can lead to higher housing contract fees. Many people exceed bandwidth quotas because they are sharing copyrighted material without permission. Copyright violation is against the law and you may be prosecuted. Because all residents in the UC Berkeley residence halls share the same limited supply of bandwidth, in our Appropriate Use Policy (AUP) we limit the amount of bandwidth any one person can use to 8GB per week. PrivacyResidents of the halls are entitled to privacy in their use of information resources. At Residential Computing, we take the privacy of our residents very seriously. Residential Computing monitors the quantity of your usage, and under a limited set of circumstances related to the security and performance of the network may also monitor network traffic. We monitor bandwidth strictly to protect the quality of the network service. For more information, please consult our Privacy Policy. Enforcement ProceduresWhen you use approximately 7GB of your 8GB per week limit on bandwidth usage, Residential Computing will send you a courtesy warning via email. The first time you exceed the 8GB bandwidth quota, your In-Room Connection will be suspended immediately and an informational email will be sent to you. A bandwidth quiz must be submitted before your In-Room Connection is re-enabled. This quiz can be accessed through our online Helpdesk. After the bandwidth quiz is returned and processed, your In-Room Connection will be re-enabled. If you reach 15GB of bandwidth usage in the same week that you took the bandwidth quiz, you will receive another courtesy warning email. If you go over 16GB of bandwidth in that week, your In-Room Connection will be disabled until Monday at 12:01 AM. For subsequent bandwidth quota violations, your In-Room Connection will be immediately suspended once you reach the 8GB weekly limit and you will receive an email notification. Your In-Room Connection will be re-enabled on Monday at 12:01AM. Understanding BandwidthTo give you a better idea of how much bandwidth different activities generally use, ResComp has created the following chart showing the amount of bandwidth consumed by a dozen common things you can do online. For an even better perspective, we've calculated how many times you could do any of these activities in a single week without going over the bandwidth limit. Now you can enjoy your Internet experience without fear of going over the weekly bandwidth limit!
