Becoming a Residential Computing Consultant (RCC) can be the first step in building a strong resume for future job opportunities. But while you’re working at Residential Computing, there’s great pay ($12 per hour) and room for growth and advancement. You get to hang out with cool people in a relaxed work enviornment. You learn a lot and get to make money for your computer and customer service skills. And most importantly, it’s fun!

Let us show you why working for Residential Computing could be one of the greatest experiences of your career at Cal. Scroll down to learn more.

First, let’s get the facts straight. What is an RCC?

  • The primary source of resident computer assistance through the Helpdesk Program in a Residence Hall
  • RCCs work primarily with their fellow RCCs, ResComp Senior Staff, Academic Center Staff, and other Hall Staff
  • In addition to direct computer troubleshooting, RCCs educate residents about technology resources to promote academic and personal growth

So how much does it pay? $12 an hour with flexible hours to fit your academic schedule! Work study is also available - we’ve got you covered. For more facts about the job and its requirements, visit the official RCC Job Description.

The people are cool. Being an RCC means you get to apply your technical skills in an extremely social environment. Due to this, our diverse men and women are smart, passionate, and great at what they do. The environment is rich and dynamic and there’s always a lot to learn.

The location is cool. You won’t need to commute to the city or get stuck in traffic on your way to work because RCC-ing takes place right next to where you live and go to school! The best part about it is the hours are flexible and you set a schedule based around what times work for you.

The environment is cool. All work and no play makes RCCs dull boys and girls. We realize the importance of having fun. Throughout the summer and academic year, the student staff of ResComp puts on various events to distract us from working. It might be anything from a midnight movie, ice skating, the annual competition against Stanfurd’s ResComp, or a just a good old LAN party.

The potential is cool. Aside from moving up to Senior and Lead positions within Residential Computing, our alumni have gone on to some great places, thanks to the fact that working at ResComp means you’ll have had a good paying job with real work experience. Some places that former staff now work at are the following:

Claim: You're staffed only by male EECS majors!
False! Our staff is totally diverse. We’ve got men and women working for us from a wide variety of different majors. Our current Lead Network Security (Mark) is an IEOR major, our Lead Unit Supervisor (Chuck) is an intended-Business major, our Lead Marketing Coordinator (Krithika) is an Economics Major, and our Windows SysAdmin (Dexter) is a Material Science major. How’s that for (just some of our) non-EECS majors?

Claim: Your jobs are too technical for me!
False! Our RCCs are a diverse group of individuals who come from all sorts of technical and non-technical backgrounds. If you don't know your stuff, we provide training and craft you into a master. Our RCCs leave ResComp with tons of more technical knowledge and customer service knowledge than when they entered.

Claim: All work study jobs are menial and boring.
False! Work study is available at ResComp and working for us is certainly far from menial and boring! We can't tell you now, but we've had some crazy adventures during resident appointments! Start working for us and read more great stories about our RCCing (mis)adventures.

Claim: Everyone who works there is a super nerd.
True! Wait... False! We swear! Really! Actually, our work environment is incredibly social, interesting, and fun. We’ve met some great people and created long-lasting friendships through our jobs. See for yourself by checking out our "The People Behind ResComp" page.
