Stay Connected: Security Tips

Wireless Security

Did you know that someone could be tracking everything you type (including your passwords) when you connect to a wireless network or website? Did you know that your conversations on AIM can be read if you use an insecure wireless network? Connecting to insecure wireless networks or websites can be dangerous, and vital private information can be stolen by hackers. Even WEP keys for wireless networks can be broken in less than a minute. Fortunately, there are many ways to protect your information online.

Pharming

Fake websites pretending to be banks can steal your passwords, but hackers can now also spoof web services, such as AirBears or RESCOMP, and steal all information that passes through that network. Assuming a web service is legitimate and secure simply based on the name of the network can jeopardize the security of your passwords and other important information.

Encryption

Information from your computer that travels to the internet through a network can easily be read by hackers. A wireless adapter put into "promiscuous" mode allows it to look around and examine everybody's internet connection. To ensure that your information is kept secure, encrypt it with Wireless Encrypted Protection (WEP) or Wireless Protected Access (WPA).

Wireless Routers

Routers are found everywhere these days, but they can be dangerous for your private information by providing hackers easier access to this information. Find out how to better secure your wireless router, and other tips to ensure that your private information is kept safe when using a router.
