On-campus Wireless
Residential Computing provides wireless networking in select areas of the residence halls. If you're looking for information about using wireless on the main campus, check out AirBears.

What is wireless?

Wireless networking (also known as WiFi) allows you to connect to the Internet without using wires, cables, or phone lines. As long as you are within reach of a wireless signal, you will be able to surf the web, send email, and chat just as if you were directly connected.

How do I get connected with wireless?

  1. Make sure your "TCP/IP settings" in the "Network Control Panel" are set for "DHCP" (Get your IP address automatically). Most laptops are already configured this way.
  2. Configure your wireless client for the Residential Computing network. The "Network ID (SSID)" is "RESCOMP".
  3. To connect to the wireless network, open a web browser and go to any webpage to login.

What wireless equipment do I need?

You will need a laptop with a wireless card. Many laptops come with built-in wireless cards, or you can purchase a card for your laptop or desktop that you can install yourself. The residence hall wireless network currently supports the 802.11b standard, which is compatible with the newer 802.11g standard.

If your computer does not have a wireless card, you may purchase wireless cards on campus at:

Hearst Field Annex, Building D1

How do I stay secure on the wireless network?

In order to keep your data secure on a wireless network, follow these simple guidelines:
  • Do not use unencrypted protocols (telnet, FTP, POP). Use secure encrypted alternatives (ssh, secure-ftp, secure-POP).
  • If you use CalMail, follow the instructions for securing your email connection at their Frequently Asked Questions page.
  • Do not type any of your passwords into an insecure webpage. A page is secure if it says "https" instead of "http" in the location bar. Most web browsers also indicate secure pages by a closed lock icon at the bottom of the browser window.

Can I install my own wireless router?

If you would like wireless access in your room or apartment but live in an area without wireless coverage, you can purchase and configure your own wireless router for use with your In-Room Connection. You must configure your router to not interfere with the residence hall wireless network. As stated in our usage policies, please keep in mind that you will be responsible for any network traffic that comes from your wireless router. There is also a more detailed step-by-step guide on installing a wireless router available at CNET.com.

Where do I get technical help?

Residential Computing Consultants (RCCs) are here to help with wireless technical support!

Bring your laptop to RCC office hours for immediate service in your Computing Center. You can also sign up for an in-room appointment with a friendly RCC by signing up on Helpdesk. Otherwise, quick questions may be answered by calling the Helpdesk hotline during normal business hours. If your call is unanswered, you can leave a message or email us.
